Okay, so, I got into this thing called Slow Holler Tarot recently, and I gotta say, it’s been a ride. I’m not really a tarot person, to be honest, but I know someone who worked on this project, and let me tell you, they’re super talented. So, I was curious, and I decided to check it out.
First, I went online to do a little digging. Apparently, this deck is a collaborative effort. It’s got illustrations and ideas from over 30 artists and 4 writers, and all of them have some kind of connection to the Southern US. That’s pretty cool, right? It’s not just one person’s vision, but a whole mix of perspectives. And they are all sharing queer identities. I found that to be a nice touch!
I decided to get my hands on the actual deck. When it arrived, the first thing I did was just flip through all the cards. Just a quick look to see the art and get a feel for it. I saw some folks online calling this a “deck flick thru” or “deck unboxing.”
Then, I decided to lay out all the cards, you know, just to see them all at once. It’s a whole different experience seeing them spread out like that. The colors, the symbols, the characters… it all just hits you in a different way.
I read somewhere that other collaborative decks, like the Artist’s Inner Vision and Elora, have turned out great, so it’s not like it needs to be just one artist for a deck to be good. So, I guess this is what I am doing with the Slow Holler Tarot deck. Each card has its own vibe, its own story, and I’ve been taking my time to really sit with each one.
I started by picking a card each day, kind of like a daily draw. I’d look at the image, read the description in the guidebook, and just think about what it might mean for me that day. Sometimes, it felt like the card was spot on, other times, not so much. But it was always interesting to see what came up.
Then, I started trying out some simple spreads. You know, those layouts where you put the cards in a certain pattern and each position has a meaning? I found some basic ones online, like a three-card spread for past, present, and future. It was a bit like putting together a puzzle, trying to see how the cards connected and what they might be saying together.
- Past: What is in the past related to my question.
- Present: What is in the present related to my question.
- Future: What is in the future related to my question.
Honestly, it’s been a really cool experience. I’m not sure I’m a tarot expert now or anything, but I’ve definitely learned a lot. And I’ve gained a new appreciation for the art and the thought that went into this deck. I am still not sure about all the things the cards are supposed to say but I am taking my time. It’s been a fun little project, and I’m glad I decided to give it a try. Maybe you should too!
So, yeah, that’s my Slow Holler Tarot adventure so far. It’s been slow, it’s been thoughtful, and it’s definitely been interesting. If you’re looking for something new to explore, maybe give it a shot. You might be surprised at what you find.
