Alright, so I had to pick some electives for my psychology major at UH, and I was kinda lost. I mean, there are so many options, right? But I knew I wanted to do something related to English since I’ve always liked reading and writing. Plus, I figured it could help me understand people better, which is kinda the whole point of psychology, you know?
Digging into the Options
First, I checked out the course catalog. It was huge! There were tons of English courses, from creative writing to literature analysis. I started making a list of the ones that sounded interesting. I was looking for something that would challenge me but not be, like, ridiculously hard. And it had to fit into my schedule, which was already pretty packed.
Then, I decided to talk to some upperclassmen. I figured they’d have some good advice since they’ve been through it all. I hit up a few friends who are also psych majors and asked them what English electives they took and what they thought of them. One of them suggested a course on literary theory, which sounded cool but maybe a bit too intense for me. Another one recommended a course on Shakespeare, which I was kinda on the fence about. I mean, Shakespeare is great and all, but it’s also kinda hard to understand sometimes.
I also went to the English department’s website and browsed through the course descriptions. I was trying to get a feel for what each course was about and what the workload was like. I didn’t want to sign up for something that would take up all my time and leave me with no energy for my other classes.
Making the Choice
After all that research, I finally narrowed it down to a few options. I was leaning towards a course on American literature since I’ve always been interested in that. But there was also a course on creative non-fiction that caught my eye. It sounded like a good way to improve my writing skills and maybe even explore some personal experiences in a creative way. I even asked the professor some questions during their office hour.
In the end, I decided to go with the creative non-fiction course. It just felt like the right fit for me. I was excited to learn something new and push myself creatively. Plus, I figured it would be a good way to meet other people who are interested in writing. I signed up for the class, and then started my journey.
The Journey in the Class
The class was just wonderful. I learned so many skills during the semester and I have a better understanding of myself as well. The professor was patient, and classmates were so great. We had a great time together. The professor gave us many chances to show our work, and provided so much feedback to us. I felt that my writing skills have improved a lot.
It was definitely a good decision. I feel like I got a lot out of the course, both in terms of my writing skills and my understanding of human nature. It was a tough process, but I’m glad I took the time to figure out what I wanted. I think every student should do so.
