Okay, so the other day I decided to do a “deck interview” spread with my new tarot deck. I’ve been seeing this kind of spread pop up all over the place, and I figured it was a good way to get to know my new cards.

First, I cleansed the deck. I just kinda waved it around in some sage smoke – nothing too fancy. I wanted to clear out any lingering energy from the store or wherever it had been before it got to me.
Setting the Mood
Next, I lit a candle and put on some chill music. You know, gotta set the vibe. I also grabbed my favorite crystal – a big chunk of amethyst – and held it for a bit while I focused on my intention: to connect with the deck and understand its personality.
The Spread Itself
I used a simple six-card spread I found online. I shuffled the deck really well while thinking about getting to know it, then I laid out the cards in this order:
- Card 1: Tell me about yourself. What is your most important characteristic?
- Card 2: What are your strengths as a deck?
- Card 3: What are your limits as a deck?
- Card 4: What are you here to teach me?
- Card 5: How can I best learn and collaborate with you?
- Card 6: What is the potential outcome of our working relationship?
My Reading, Card by card
I flipped over the cards one by one. And, It was truly amazing for me.

For the first card which is “Tell me about yourself. What is your most important characteristic?”, I got a very intresting card, then, I spent some time looking at each card, thinking about the imagery, and jotting down my initial impressions in my journal. I didn’t rush it. I just let the cards speak to me.
After I felt like I had a good grasp on each individual card, I looked at the spread as a whole. I tried to see how the cards connected to each other and what kind of overall message they were conveying about the deck’s personality and how I could best work with it.
Conclusion
Honestly, the whole process was super insightful. It felt like I had a real conversation with the deck, and I definitely feel more connected to it now. I’d recommend trying a deck interview spread to anyone who’s got a new tarot deck – or even an old one that they want to get to know better!
