Well, let me tell ya, this whole “I wish I knew no astronomy when stars appear” thing, it’s got me thinkin’. Don’t know nothin’ ’bout no astronomy myself, never went to school for that fancy stuff. But I reckon it means somethin’ about wishin’ you didn’t know so much, ya know?
What’s it all about, this star wishin’? Sounds like someone’s heartbroken, that’s what it sounds like. See, when you’re lookin’ up at them stars, all sparkly and whatnot, you start thinkin’. And sometimes, thinkin’ too much ain’t good for ya. This fella, or lady, whoever said this, they know too much about the stars, about how far away things are, maybe about how things change. And it makes ’em sad.
- They wish they didn’t know so much because knowin’ makes ’em miss someone.
- They say “I wish you were here.” Plain and simple, they’re lonely.
- And them stars, they just remind ’em of how far away that someone is, or maybe how things ain’t never gonna be the same.
It’s like this, see? When you’re young, you don’t know nothin’. You just look up at the sky and think, “Oh, pretty.” You don’t know ’bout light years and planets and all that jibber jabber. You just see pretty lights. And maybe that’s better. Maybe knowin’ too much just makes things complicated.
I remember when my old man passed… I looked up at the sky that night, and it was full of stars. And I didn’t think about no astronomy. I just thought, “He’s up there somewhere.” It was simple. It was sad, but it was simple. Maybe if I knew all about them constellations and whatnot, I woulda just felt more lost.
This person, they keep sayin’ they wish they were in a car, shiftin’ gears, goin’ somewhere new, or maybe goin’ back to where they was before. They’re restless, see? They’re tryin’ to escape the thinkin’, escape the knowin’. They want things to be different, or they want things to be like they used to be. And them stars, they just keep remindin’ ’em that things ain’t neither.
Maybe ignorance is bliss, like they say. Sometimes, not knowin’ is easier. Not knowin’ how much you miss someone, not knowin’ how much things have changed, not knowin’ how far away you are from where you wanna be. Them stars, they represent all that knowin’, all that distance, all that change. And this person, they just want to forget it all for a little while.
I ain’t sayin’ learnin’ is bad, mind you. But sometimes, too much learnin’ can hurt ya. It can make you see things you don’t wanna see, feel things you don’t wanna feel. And when you’re lookin’ up at them stars, wishin’ you didn’t know so much, well, that’s just a sign that your heart’s achin’ for somethin’ simple, somethin’ close, somethin’ real.
So, what’s the meanin’ of it all? I reckon it means that sometimes, the best thing you can do is just look up at the sky and see pretty lights. Don’t think too much, don’t analyze too much. Just be. Just feel. And maybe, just maybe, that’s enough. ‘Cause sometimes, knowin’ less is knowin’ more, ya know? It’s about wanting to go back to a simpler time, before the knowledge made everything complicated and painful. It’s about yearning for a connection that’s been lost, and wishing that the vastness of the universe didn’t emphasize that loss.
And that wishin’ they didn’t know astronomy? It’s just a way of sayin’ they wish they could go back to a time when things were simpler, when love was easy, and when the stars were just pretty lights in the sky, not reminders of everything they’ve lost or can’t have.
