Well, howdy there! Today, we’re gonna jaw about some sayings from a book, somethin’ about a fella named Aristotle and another one named Dante. I ain’t read the whole thing myself, mind you, too busy with my chickens and such, but I heard some folks chatterin’ ’bout it.

Seems like these boys, Aristotle and Dante, they got a lot on their minds. Young ‘uns, I reckon. Always thinkin’ ’bout big things, like the whole dang universe and all its secrets. One of ’em, Dante I think it was, he says, “Someday, I’m gonna discover all the secrets of the universe.” Bless his heart. Sounds like somethin’ my grandpappy woulda said, full of beans and vinegar.
Then Aristotle, or maybe it was Dante again, hard to keep track of these city slicker names, he goes on about findin’ those secrets in someone’s hand. Can you believe that? “I bet you could sometimes find all the mysteries of the universe in someone’s hand.” Now, I’ve held a lotta hands in my time – babies, old folks, even a few grumpy cows – but I ain’t never seen no universe in ’em. Maybe I just wasn’t lookin’ hard enough, or maybe these boys are just talkin’ fancy.
- One thing’s for sure, though, they got a way with words. Another sayin’ goes somethin’ like, “Words were different when they lived inside of you.” Now that, that makes a lick of sense. Words can be tricky things. Sometimes they come out all wrong, all jumbled up like a ball of yarn. But when you keep ’em inside for a while, let ’em simmer like a good stew, they come out clearer, I reckon.
- And then there’s this one about poems bein’ like people: “I got to thinking that poems were like people. Some…” Didn’t hear the rest of it, but it got me thinkin’. Yeah, poems and people, they’re both a mixed bag, ain’t they? Some sweet, some sour, some you understand, some you just scratch your head at.
This Aristotle fella, he’s a bit of a loner, angry even, got a brother in the clink. He meets Dante and, well, things start changin’ for him. He starts askin’ questions, ’bout himself, ’bout his family. Questions he never thought to ask before. Guess that’s what friends do, stir things up, make you think. It reminds me of my own young’uns, always asking why the sky is blue, or why the rooster crows so darn early.
There’s another sayin’ I heard, somethin’ about a boy tellin’ someone that he was the first human bein’ apart from his ma. “I wanted to tell them that he was the first human being, apart from my mother.” Now, that’s a powerful thing to say, ain’t it? Makes you wonder about what that boy had been through and who this person he’s talkin’ to must mean to him.

Seems like this book is full of these kinds of deep thoughts. Folks are always lookin’ for meanin’ in things, tryin’ to figure out the world, or themselves, or whatever. Me? I just try to get through the day, keep my chickens fed, and my garden growin’. But maybe there’s somethin’ to these fancy words, somethin’ worth ponderin’ over while you’re shellin’ peas or watchin’ the sunset.
I heard there are even page numbers with these sayings, so if you’re one of them fancy book readers you can look them up. Like one fella says, Quote explanations, with page numbers, for over 45,321 quotes. Now that’s a lot of talkin’, more than I hear in a whole year out here on the farm! It’s all about character analysis and stuff. They got books for everything these days, I swear.
So, there you have it. A little bit of wisdom from Aristotle and Dante, or at least from folks who’ve read about ’em. Take it with a grain of salt, like I always say. Life’s too short to get bogged down in too much thinkin’. Just try to be decent, be kind, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll find a little bit of the universe in your own backyard. And if you’re looking for secrets, I bet you’ll find more in an old hen house than you will in some fancy book!
Anyway, that’s enough jawin’ for one day. I gotta go feed them chickens.
