Alright, so you wanna know about this psychology stuff, huh? Motivation, emotion, and personality, they say. Sounds fancy, but it ain’t nothin’ too complicated, ya hear?
First off, let’s talk about motivation. What gets ya goin’, you know? Like, why do ya get outta bed in the mornin’? Some folks say it’s ’cause your body needs stuff, like food and water. That’s called “home-what’s-it-called,” homeo-stasis, somethin’ like that. It just means your body wants to stay the same, ya know? Not too hot, not too cold, not too hungry, not too full.
Then there’s this other thing, “in-cent-tive theory” they call it. That’s just like, if ya do somethin’ good, ya get a treat. Like a dog gettin’ a biscuit for sittin’ pretty. Or if ya do somethin’ bad, somethin’ bad happens to ya. Kinda like how Ma used to smack my behind when I was a kid for stealin’ cookies from the jar. That sure motivated me not to do it again, let me tell ya!
- Body needs: Food, water, sleep – that’s the “homeo” thingamajig.
- Treats and punishments: That’s the “in-cent-tive” stuff.
- And then there’s somethin’ about “arousal,” like folks need a bit of excitement in their life, or they get bored. Like my grandson, always gotta be jumpin’ around and makin’ noise, or he gets all fidgety.
Now, emotions, that’s a whole ‘nother story. Ya got yer happy, yer sad, yer angry, yer scared. It’s all in yer head and yer body, ya know? Like, when yer happy, ya smile and ya feel all warm and fuzzy inside. When yer mad, ya get all red in the face and yer fists clench up. It’s just how the good Lord made us, I reckon.
And it ain’t just feelings, ya know? It’s how yer body reacts too. Like, if a bear jumps out at ya in the woods, yer heart starts thumpin’ like a drum, ya start sweatin’, and ya run like the devil himself is chasin’ ya. That’s your body gettin’ ready to fight or run away, they call it “fight or flight”. Makes sense, I guess.
And then there’s this personality thing. That’s just what makes ya, ya, ya know? Are ya a grumpy old goat like me, or are ya all sunshine and rainbows? Some folks are quiet, some folks are loud, some folks are kind, some folks are mean. It’s just how ya are, I guess.
And they got all these fancy words for it, like “per-sever-ance,” that just means stickin’ to somethin’ even when it’s hard. Like my old man, he worked on that farm his whole life, rain or shine, even when his back was killin’ him. That’s perseverance for ya.
They also talk about this fella named Maslow, and he had this idea like a pyramid or somethin’. Said ya gotta have yer basic needs met first, ya know, like food and shelter, before ya can worry about feelin’ loved or important or whatever. Makes sense to me, ya can’t be thinkin’ about fancy stuff when yer stomach’s rumblin’ like a freight train.
So, that’s the long and short of it, this motivation, emotion, and personality stuff. It’s just about what gets ya goin’, what ya feel, and how ya are. Ain’t nothin’ to it, really. Just common sense, if ya ask me.
So, if ya wanna learn more, I hear there’s these AP Psychology tests ya can take. I don’t know nothin’ about them, but the young folks say it helps them learn. They got practice questions and explanations and all that fancy stuff. Maybe it’ll help ya understand all them big words better than I can explain ‘em.
And remember, whether it’s the “homeo-thingy” or “in-cent-tives” or just plain old stubbornness, findin’ what motivates ya and understandin’ yer emotions and personality, that’s the key to livin’ a good life, or so they say. I just get up and do what needs doin’, that’s my motivation!
