Alright, listen up, gonna tell ya about this fella, Alfred Binet. He was some kinda brain doctor, ya know? Smart fella, I reckon. Folks say he was from France, way over the water. Don’t know much about that place, but they make some fancy bread, I hear.
Anyway, this Binet, he was all about figuring out how smart folks are. Like, he wanted to measure it. Can you believe that? Measure how much someone knows! Sounds like a load of hooey, if you ask me. But he did it, they say. Made up some kinda test, a brain test, ya might say.
- He wanted to see how well kids could think, I guess.
- Like, if they could remember stuff, or figure things out.
- Probably asked ’em a bunch of silly questions, just like they do in school these days.
They call it the Binet-Simon test, or somethin’ like that. Simon musta been another fella helpin’ him out. Probably holdin’ the pencil, writin’ down the answers. Kids back then, they probably didn’t like it much, bein’ poked and prodded with questions. Just like my grandkids, they hate doin’ their homework.
This test, it was the first of its kind, they say. Nobody ever tried to measure smarts before. Guess Binet was a real thinker. He musta sat there, scratchin’ his head, wonderin’ how he could figure out who was smart and who wasn’t. Probably lost some sleep over it, I bet.
Now, this test, it changed things. Made people think about smarts in a whole new way. Before, ya was either smart or ya wasn’t, simple as that. But Binet, he showed that there was different kinds of smart, I reckon. Some folks are good with words, others are good with numbers. Makes sense, don’t it?
This test, it led to other tests, too. Like that Stanford-Binet test. Stanford, that’s a place out in California, I think. My nephew went out there once, said it was hotter than a pepper sprout in July. Anyway, they took Binet’s test and changed it up a bit, made it their own.
And then there’s that IQ thing. You know, that number they give ya to tell you how smart you are. Binet’s test, it started all that. Personally, I don’t put much stock in numbers. A number can’t tell you how kind someone is, or how hard they work. But folks seem to like ’em, those numbers.
So, this Binet fella, he really stirred things up, didn’t he? Made people think about smarts in a different way. And his test, well, it’s still around today, in one form or another. Shows you how important it was, I guess.
Now, I ain’t no brain doctor, but I know a thing or two about people. And I reckon Binet was a good fella, tryin’ to help kids learn better. Even if he did it with a bunch of silly questions. We all gotta do what we gotta do, right?
So there you have it, that’s what I know about Alfred Binet. A French fella who made a test to measure smarts. Don’t know if it’s all that important, but folks seem to think so. And that’s good enough for me, I guess.
