Alright, listen up you young’uns, let’s talk about this “AP Psychology Summer Assignment” thing. Sounds fancy, but don’t you go frettin’ none. It ain’t rocket science, though they might try to make it sound that way.
So, this here assignment, they say it’s got FIVE mini-assignments. Five! That’s a whole handful, ain’t it? But don’t you worry your pretty little head, we’ll get through it. They say each one’s gonna help you out during the school year, and get you ready for… well, for whatever they’re gettin’ you ready for. Sounds like a bunch of hooey to me, but you gotta do what you gotta do, right?
They say it’s gonna be a “exciting year,” learnin’ about how people’s brains work and all that. And learnin’ about yourself too. Hmph, I could tell you a thing or two about people, and I ain’t never set foot in no fancy school. But hey, that’s what they pay them teachers for, I guess.
Now, the important part. They say you gotta learn a whole mess of words. 950 of ’em! Can you believe that? 950! That’s more words than I use in a whole month, I reckon. They call ’em “concepts,” these words. Sounds like somethin’ a city slicker would say. But you gotta learn ’em, they say. So, you learn ’em.
- First thing, they say, welcome to AP Psychology. Well, welcome to you too, I say. Hope you got a good pencil sharpener.
- Second, they say, study with that “Quizlet” thing. Sounds like a newfangled gadget to me. And “memorize flashcards.” Flashcards? When I was your age, we memorized by writin’ things down, over and over again, until our fingers were sore. But you kids and your fancy technology.
They go on and on about “intrinsic motivation” and “extrinsic motivation.” Big words, right? Let me tell you what motivation is. Motivation is gettin’ your chores done so you can go play with your friends. Motivation is studyin’ hard so you can get a good job and buy yourself a nice piece of land. That’s motivation, plain and simple.
Now, these flashcards, they say you can get ’em on paper or on that computer thing. Whatever works for you, I guess. But you gotta know them words, they say. “Intrinsic motivation” is doin’ somethin’ ’cause you want to. Like eatin’ a piece of pie. “Extrinsic motivation” is doin’ somethin’ ’cause you get somethin’ for it. Like doin’ your chores so you get your allowance. See? Not so hard after all.
And if you wanna do good in this here “course,” as they call it, you gotta put in the work. That’s what it all boils down to. No gettin’ around it. Study hard, learn them words, and maybe, just maybe, you’ll figure out what makes them city folks tick.
So, there you have it. That’s the lowdown on this “AP Psychology Summer Assignment.” Don’t let it scare you. Just take it one step at a time, and you’ll be fine. And if you get stuck, just remember what I told you. Motivation is pie, and chores get you money. You keep that in mind, and you’ll be alright.
And don’t forget, those city folk like big words, so make sure you can use them too, even if you don’t really understand what they’re on about. Just nod your head and say things like “cognitive dissonance” and “operant conditioning”. They’ll think you’re real smart.
One more thing, they gonna try to tell you about how the mind works, all complicated like. Don’t you believe it all. Most of it is just common sense. People are people, whether they got a fancy degree or not. You treat folks right, and they’ll mostly treat you right back. That’s all the psychology you really need to know.
Now, go on and get to studyin’. And don’t forget to eat your vegetables.
