Alright, let’s talk about this… uh… “ap psychology unit 7 motivation emotion and personality” thing. Sounds fancy, don’t it? But it’s just about why folks do what they do, how they feel, and what kind of people they are. Simple as that.
First off, they talk about motivation. That’s just what gets you goin’. Like, why do you get outta bed in the mornin’? For some, it’s ’cause their belly’s rumblin’ and they gotta eat. That’s your body tellin’ ya what to do. For others, maybe they wanna get that raise at work, so they hustle. That’s somethin’ in your head pushin’ ya.
They got all these bigshot theories about it, you know? Like, some say we’re just like animals, doin’ things ’cause we’re born that way. Like a bird buildin’ a nest. Nobody taught it, it just knows. Then there’s other folks sayin’ it’s all about rewards and punishments. Do good, get a treat. Do bad, get a whippin’. Or maybe you do things just ‘cause you like doin’ ‘em. Like me, I like knittin’. Nobody pays me, I just enjoy it. They call that fancy names, somethin’ like “intrinsic” and “extrinsic”. Don’t ask me what that means, I just know what I like.
Then there’s emotion. That’s your feelin’s. You know, happy, sad, mad, scared. They say it’s all mixed up with your body. Like, when you get scared, your heart starts thumpin’ and you sweat. And when you’re happy, you smile and maybe even do a little jig. Makes sense to me. Your body and your feelings, they go together like peas and carrots.
- Happy – Makes you wanna sing and dance.
- Sad – Makes you wanna cry and eat ice cream.
- Mad – Makes you wanna stomp your feet and yell.
- Scared – Makes you wanna run and hide.
Now, personality, that’s just the kind of person you are. Are you bossy or shy? Are you neat or messy? Are you always on time or always late? Some folks are always calm and collected. Nothin’ seems to faze ‘em. Others, they fly off the handle at the littlest thing. They even got names for different types of personalities. Heard somethin’ about a “Type C” personality – them’s the folks who like things just so, everything in its place, neat and tidy. Reminds me of my sister, she’s always been like that. Can’t stand a crooked picture frame.
And they talk about how all this stuff is connected. Like, if you’re a real go-getter, maybe that’s ’cause you get a thrill outta achievin’ things. Or if you’re always worried, maybe you got a personality that makes you see the bad in everything. It’s all tangled up together, like a big ball of yarn.
They even got this thing called the Yerkes-Dodson Law. Sounds complicated, but it ain’t. Basically, it says if somethin’ is easy, you can be all worked up and do it fine. But if somethin’s hard, bein’ too worked up makes you mess up. Like, if you’re bakin’ a cake, bein’ a little excited is okay. But if you’re tryin’ to fix a leaky faucet, you gotta be calm and focused, otherwise you’ll just make a bigger mess.
And this “ap psychology” thing, they study how all this changes as you grow up, from a little bitty baby to an old geezer like me. How you learn to handle your feelin’s, how your personality develops, and how what motivates you changes over time. It’s a whole lot to take in, but it’s kinda interestin’ when you think about it.
So, yeah, that’s what I got from all that “motivation, emotion, and personality” talk. Just folks doin’ things, feelin’ things, and bein’ themselves. Nothin’ too fancy about it, when you get right down to it.
