Well, let me tell ya, this psychology stuff, it’s somethin’ else. Folks always thinkin’ and doin’ things, and you gotta wonder why. So, if you wanna write somethin’ about it, you gotta pick somethin’ folks can argue about, you know? Like, is it the way you’re raised, or is it just how you’re born? That’s a good one to start with.
Nature versus Nurture: The Big Fight
See, some folks say it’s all in the blood. If your Ma and Pa were grumpy, well, you’re gonna be grumpy too. That’s your nature, they say. Can’t change it, like the color of your eyes. But then you got other folks sayin’, “Hold on a minute! If you raise a kid with love and kindness, they’ll be good and kind, no matter what their folks were like.” That’s nurture, see? Like how you water a plant and it grows. So, you could argue all day about that one. Is it the seeds or the soil? That’s the question, ain’t it? And nobody really knows for sure. It’s a good thing to jaw about, though. Plenty to say, you know?
- Nature: Born this way
- Nurture: Learned along the way
Memory: Why do we forget stuff?
Now, another thing that gets me is memory. Why do you remember some things clear as day, and others, poof, gone like smoke? You remember what you ate for breakfast yesterday? Maybe. You remember your first kiss? Probably. See? Some things stick, some things don’t. And then you got old folks, like me, well, not me exactly, but old folks, and they start forgettin’ things. Where they put their keys, what day it is. Is that just part of gettin’ old? Or is there somethin’ more to it? Can you do somethin’ to keep your brain sharp? Eat more blueberries? Do them crossword puzzles? Who knows? But it’s somethin’ to think about. And argue about too! Is it just gettin’ old or is it somethin’ else? Maybe it’s that “alzy-timers” disease everyone talks about. Poor things.
Stress and Anxiety: Why are we all so worried?
And another thing, why are folks so stressed out all the time? Back in my day, we worked hard, sure, but we didn’t have all this worryin’. Now everyone’s got anxiety. Is it the internet? Is it the news? Is it too much sugar? Too much work? Not enough sleep? You can argue about that til the cows come home, I tell ya. Is it somethin’ wrong with our brains? Or is it the world that’s gone crazy? Seems to me like it’s the world, but maybe I’m just old-fashioned. Folks need to slow down a bit, maybe go fishin’ or somethin’. Get their minds off things.
Mental Health: Why don’t we talk about it more?
And speakin’ of worryin’, what about when it gets real bad? When folks can’t even get outta bed? Depression, they call it. And other mental health stuff. Used to be, folks just said you were “touched” or “crazy” and that was that. Locked you away, maybe. But now we know it’s more than that, right? It’s like any other sickness. But why are we still so ashamed to talk about it? You get a broken leg, you tell everyone. You get depressed, you keep it a secret. Why is that? It’s your brain, just like your leg is your leg. Needs fixin’ sometimes, too. So why the big secret? We need to talk about it more, that’s what I think. Get it out in the open.
Social Media: Good or Bad for your head?
And then you got these young folks, always on their phones. “Social media,” they call it. Is that good for your head? Seems to me it makes folks more worried than ever. Always comparin’ themselves to others. Always lookin’ for likes and whatnot. But then you hear it can connect folks too, bring ’em together. So which is it? Is it makin’ us lonely or is it makin’ us friends? I dunno. Seems like a lot of wasted time to me, but what do I know? I still like talkin’ to folks face to face, myself. But maybe that’s just because I’m old and that’s how things were back when.
Addiction: Why can’t some folks just stop?
And what about when folks get hooked on things? Drugs, alcohol, gamblin’. Why can’t they just stop? Is it a weakness? Or is it a sickness? Some say it’s a choice, some say it’s a disease. And what do you do about it? Punish ’em? Help ’em? Both? It’s a tough one, ain’t it? Families get torn apart, lives get ruined. There’s gotta be somethin’ more to it than just bad choices, though.
Dreaming: What’s all that about?
And here’s another thing, what about dreams? When you’re sleepin’ and you see all kinds of crazy stuff. What does it mean? Is it your brain just sortin’ things out? Is it a message from somewhere else? Some folks say you can learn a lot from your dreams, if you just pay attention. Other folks say it’s just nonsense. But it’s mighty interestin’, ain’t it? Why do we dream? What do our dreams mean? I dreamt I was flyin’ last night. What do you make of that?
So, there you have it. A bunch of things to argue about when it comes to psychology. It’s all about how the mind works, why we do what we do. And there ain’t no easy answers, that’s for sure. But it’s good to think about it, and it’s good to talk about it. And it’s sure good to argue about it too, long as you don’t get too riled up! Now, go on and write somethin’ good. And make sure it’s somethin’ folks will want to read and jaw about.
