Okay, let me tell you about my experience with Bowie State’s psychology program. I remember when I first started, I was really green, didn’t know much about what I was getting into. I chose Bowie State mainly because it’s the oldest Historically Black College in Maryland, established way back in 1865. Plus, it’s super diverse, which I really appreciated.
So, I enrolled in the psychology program, and let me tell you, it was quite the journey. They offer two degrees: a Bachelor of Science and a Bachelor of Arts. I went for the BS because I was thinking of going to grad school for clinical psychology.
Courses I Took
- PSYC 101 – General Psychology: This was the first course I took. It gave me a broad overview of the field. It’s a good starting point, and I learned a ton about the basics.
- PSYC 200 – Introduction to Psychopathology: This one was a bit tougher, but super interesting. I delved into mental disorders, their diagnosis, and treatment. We had to observe and interview, which was pretty intense but eye-opening.
- PSYC 202 – Learning and Memory: Here, I explored how people learn and remember things. It wasn’t just about memorizing stuff; we examined different theories and did some experiments.
- PSYC 204: Sorry I don’t remember its name, but this course was more about applying what we learned. We integrated our psychology studies with other subjects like philosophy and sociology. It was cool to see how everything connects.
The whole program really pushed me to think critically about human behavior. I had to analyze a lot of case studies and conduct my own research projects. It wasn’t easy, but it definitely prepared me for real-world applications.
I also had to assess and diagnose mental and emotional disorders. We practiced through observations and interviews. It was challenging, but it equipped me with practical skills. I remember one project where we had to develop a treatment plan for a hypothetical patient. It was tough, but it really helped me understand the process.
Overall, my time at Bowie State really shaped my understanding of psychology. I gained a lot of practical experience, and the diverse environment enriched my learning. I’m really glad I chose this path and went through this program. It was a lot of hard work, but it paid off in the end.
