Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this book, “Cognitive Psychology” by some guy named Bruce Goldstein. I wanted to get inside my head, you know, figure out how this whole thinking thing works.

First, I grabbed the book. It’s not exactly light reading, but it’s not too bad either. Goldstein throws in a bunch of real-life examples, which makes it easier to get what he’s talking about. I started with the first chapter, which talked about what cognitive psychology even is. It’s basically the study of how we think, remember stuff, pay attention, and all that jazz.
Then I dug into some of the experiments they’ve done over the years. It’s pretty wild to see how they test this stuff. They’ve got people doing all sorts of weird tasks to see how their brains react. I read about this one experiment where they showed people a bunch of images really fast, and then asked them to recall what they saw. Turns out, our memory isn’t as great as we think it is.
I spent a good chunk of time on the chapter about perception. That’s how we interpret the stuff we see, hear, smell, and all that. It’s crazy how much our brains do without us even realizing it. Like, you look at a chair, and you just know it’s a chair. But there’s a whole bunch of processing going on behind the scenes to make that happen.
- I learned about attention, too. How we can focus on one thing and tune out everything else. Like when you’re at a party, and you can still have a conversation with someone even though there’s a ton of noise around you. That’s your brain filtering out all the distractions.
- Memory was another big one. Goldstein goes into short-term memory, long-term memory, and how we can improve our memory. I tried out some of the memory techniques he talked about, like making up stories to remember lists. It actually works!
- I tried reading about language, but that got pretty complicated. There’s a whole section on how we understand sentences and stuff. I gotta admit, I skimmed through some of that.
Then there’s this whole part about problem-solving and decision-making. How we make choices, and how sometimes we make really dumb ones. He talks about biases and stuff, and how our brains can trick us. It definitely gave me something to think about the next time I have to make a big decision.

The Wrap-Up
So yeah, I worked my way through a good chunk of this “Cognitive Psychology” book. It wasn’t always easy, but I definitely learned a lot. It’s made me think about my own thinking, which is kinda meta, right? If you’re looking to get inside your head a little bit, you might want to check it out. Just be prepared to do some actual thinking!
