Okay, so I’ve been digging into this whole “careers with a masters in counseling psychology” thing, and let me tell you, it’s been a journey. I started out thinking, “Hey, I’ve got this fancy degree, now what?” It felt a bit overwhelming, to be honest. I spent days just googling stuff, trying to figure out what I could actually do with this piece of paper.
First, I made a list of all the job titles I could find that seemed related. It was a mess. I mean, “counseling psychologist” is obvious, but then there were things like “career counselor,” “school psychologist,” “marriage and family therapist”… you name it. It was a lot to take in. Then I found the title “I/O psychologists”. I don’t know what this is at first but finally I found it was a job combine psychology and business. That’s interesting!
Then, I started looking up what each of these jobs actually entailed. Like, what do these people do all day? I read a bunch of job descriptions, which were, let’s just say, not always the most exciting reading material. But it gave me a better idea of the day-to-day reality of each role.
- I checked out some online forums where people in these fields were talking about their work. That was super helpful. Real people, talking about the good, the bad, and the ugly of their jobs. Way better than those dry job descriptions.
- I even reached out to a few people I knew who had some connection to the field, even if it was just a friend of a friend. I asked them if I could pick their brains for a few minutes. Most people were surprisingly willing to chat, and those conversations were gold.
After all that, I started to narrow down my options. I realized some of these jobs just didn’t sound like me at all. Others sounded really interesting, but maybe not right for this point in my life. And then there were a few that really sparked my interest.
So, that’s where I’m at now. I’ve got a shortlist of career paths that I’m feeling pretty good about. I’m starting to tailor my resume and cover letter for these specific roles, and I’m even thinking about doing some informational interviews to learn more. It’s still a work in progress, but I’m definitely feeling a lot more confident than when I started. It feels like I’ve turned this big, scary question mark into something a lot more manageable. And I finally realized a master’s degree in counseling psychology could be used in so many fields!
That’s my journey, hope you guys find it useful!
