Okay, so I decided to dive into “Experience Psychology” by Laura King, the 5th edition. I’d heard it was a good intro to psych, and I’ve been wanting to get a better handle on, you know, how people tick.

First, I got my hands on the book. I just grabbed a used copy online – way cheaper that way. It arrived, and man, it’s a thick one! A little intimidating, but the cover looked kinda cool, all colorful and stuff.
Getting Started
I flipped through it, checking out the table of contents. Lots of chapters, covering everything from the brain and nervous system to social psychology and mental disorders. Seemed like a pretty broad overview.
- Chapter 1: What is Psychology? (Seemed like a good place to start!)
- Chapter 2: Psychology’s Scientific Method
- …and so on. Lots of stuff!
I decided to start with Chapter 1. It was all about defining psychology and looking at the different perspectives, like behavioral, cognitive, and psychodynamic. Honestly, some of it felt a little dry, but I pushed through. I took some messy notes, just jotting down key terms and trying to summarize the main ideas in my own words.
Making it Stick
What really helped were the little “Check Your Understanding” quizzes at the end of each section. I forced myself to answer them without looking back at the text. Sometimes I got them wrong, which was annoying, but it definitely showed me where I needed to focus more.

I found that reading a chapter straight through was too much. My brain would just turn to mush. So, I started breaking it down, reading a few pages, then taking a break, maybe watching a quick video or just walking around. Then I’d come back and try to explain what I’d read to my cat. (She wasn’t very interested, but it helped me!)
The Long Haul
I’m still working my way through the book. It’s definitely not something you can rush. I’m trying to do a chapter a week, but sometimes life gets in the way. I am making progress. And while it is not easy to go through, It is a great book to learn.
Overall, I’d say it’s a pretty good textbook. It’s not exactly light reading, but it’s giving me a solid foundation in psychology. I’m actually starting to understand some of the concepts, and that feels pretty good. It’s a slow process, but I’m sticking with it!
