Okay, so I’ve been messing around with this idea for a while, and I finally got around to doing it: making a Honkai Star Rail tarot card set. Yeah, you heard that right, tarot cards!
First, I had to figure out which characters from the game would fit the roles in a tarot deck. You know, your classic tarot has a bunch of cards with different meanings, right? There are 78 cards in total.
The first group I tackled was the Major Arcana. These are the big-name cards, the ones with all the cool pictures and deep meanings. There are usually 22 of these, numbered from 0 to 21. They are pretty important, I guess.
- I spent hours going through the Honkai Star Rail characters on HoYoLAB, trying to match them up with the Major Arcana cards. For instance, who would be The Fool? Who fits The Emperor? It was a lot of thinking, and man, my brain was fried.
- I made a bunch of notes, comparing the character’s personalities and stories to the meanings of the cards. For example, I’d look at a character like, say, Jing Yuan, and think, “Okay, he’s a strong leader, so maybe he could be The Emperor.”
After that, I moved on to the Minor Arcana. This was a bit trickier, since there are 56 of these cards, divided into four suits, just like regular playing cards. But there’s not a ton of characters in the game.
- I had to get a little creative here. I decided to use some of the, like, less-important characters for these. And for some of them, I just used their Light Cones. It worked, I guess!
Once I had all the characters matched up, I started working on the actual designs. It was super fun.
- I found some cool artwork of the characters online, and used those as a base. I did try to find the ones from the official, you know, to make them legit.
- Then I added some tarot-like elements to the designs, like the symbols for each card and some fancy borders. I wanted them to look like real tarot cards, you know?
It took a while, but I finally finished the whole set! It was a lot of work, but also a ton of fun. I’m pretty happy with how they turned out. They look pretty cool, if I do say so myself. All in all, the characters fit perfectly in most positions. It is so much fun.
I don’t know, maybe I’ll try to get them printed someday, or maybe I’ll just keep them as a fun little project. What do you guys think? Would you be interested in a Honkai Star Rail tarot deck?
