Well, let me tell ya somethin’ about these evangelical churches in Jerusalem. It ain’t like back home, that’s for sure. Everything’s so…old. And the people, they talk funny. But they believe in Jesus, just like us, so that’s good.
I heard tell there’s this big tower, the Church of the Ascension they call it. Highest place in the whole city, they say. You can see everything from up there, the old part and the new part, all them hills and houses. Sounds mighty impressive. Don’t know if my old legs could make it up all them stairs, though.
Now, these evangelical folks, they go to church on Sundays, just like us. And they read the Bible, too. They got all sorts of little groups where they study it together. And they have get-togethers, like picnics and such. Just like back home at the church social. People is people, no matter where you go.
- They got this one church, Christ Church, they call it. It’s real pretty, all fixed up fancy.
- The Germans go there, and some Arab folks, and other Protestants too. Protestant’s like us, mostly.
- They fixed it up real nice, but they kept some of the old stuff. Shows you they respect the past, I guess.
There’s even an Arab evangelical church in the old part of the city. Imagine that! Arabs believing in Jesus. The world’s a changin’, ain’t it? They say they’re the only ones like that in the whole old city. Must be tough, bein’ the only ones.
And talk about the Church of the Holy Sepulchre…that’s a big one, they say. Lots of folks go there. Seems like everybody believes in somethin’ in this city, just different ways of doin’ it.
I heard tell that this Jesus-believin’ thing is growin’ real fast in some places, like down in South America and Africa and Asia. All over the world, folks is findin’ Jesus. It’s like a fire spreadin’. Makes you feel good, knowin’ you ain’t alone in this world.
And these evangelical folks, they ain’t all the same. They got all sorts of different names, like Reformed and Baptist and Methodist and Lutheran and all that. But they all believe in Jesus and the Bible, so that’s what matters. Reminds me of how we got different kinds of beans in the garden, but they’re all beans.
It all started a long time ago, they say, back in the 1700s. Some folks over in Europe and England started gettin’ real fired up about Jesus again. They called it a revival. Guess people was losin’ their way and needed to find Jesus again. Just like folks do today. We all need a little Jesus in our lives, that’s for sure.
Jerusalem, it’s a holy place, they say. Lots of history there. Lots of churches too, not just the evangelical ones. But the evangelical ones, they’re special, ’cause they believe like we do. They believe in Jesus, and they believe in the Bible. And that’s what matters most, ain’t it? It gives you comfort, knowin’ there are others out there who believe what you do, even if they talk funny and live far away.
It’s a big world, and there’s lots of different people. But if you got Jesus in your heart, you got a friend wherever you go. Even in Jerusalem, with all them old buildings and strange languages.
