Well, let me tell ya ’bout this here Calumet Astronomy Center, though I ain’t no fancy scholar or nothin’. It’s out there in Buckley Homestead, y’know, just a mile or so south of the barnyard. Easy to find, even for an old woman like me.
They got all sorts of stuff there, like them telescopes and such. Big ones, small ones, all kinds of contraptions for lookin’ at the sky. Folks say you can see all sorts of things up there – stars, planets, and whatnot. I ain’t sure I believe it all, but it’s somethin’ to see, that’s for sure.
The place is pretty big, about 40 acres they say. It’s a joiny effort, you see, between the Lake County Parks folks and the Calumet Astronomical Society. Sounds fancy, don’t it? But from what I gather, it’s just a bunch of folks who like lookin’ at the stars. They even have them experts there who can tell ya what you’re lookin’ at.
- They have events too, nighttime gatherings where they point them telescopes at the sky and tell you stories about the Milky Way.
- I went to one of them once. Couldn’t make heads or tails of half of it, but it was pretty, all them sparkly lights up there.
- They say it’s an observatory, which is just a fancy word for a place where you watch the sky or the weather or whatever.
Now, I ain’t no scientist, but I reckon it’s kinda neat to think about all that stuff up there. Makes you feel small, y’know? Like a tiny ant in a big ol’ world. But it’s also kinda comfortin’, knowin’ that there’s somethin’ bigger than just us and our little problems.
They got all kinds of information there, too, about the community and such. Not sure why they got that at an astronomy place, but I guess it’s handy if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to do around here. They got a whole bunch of parks in Lake County, and this astronomy center is just one of ’em.
The folks who run the place, them fellers from the Astronomical Society, they’re real nice. They’ll answer your questions, even if you sound as dumb as I do. They’ll show you how to use the telescopes and tell you what you’re lookin’ at. And they don’t make you feel bad if you don’t understand. That’s what I like about ’em.
So, if you’re lookin’ for somethin’ to do one night, I reckon you could do worse than head on over to the Calumet Astronomy Center. It’s a good way to spend an evenin’, even if you ain’t no Einstein. Just lookin’ up at the sky, breathin’ in the fresh air, and thinkin’ about the big ol’ universe. It’s somethin’ else, I tell ya.
And like I said, it ain’t hard to find. Just head south from the barnyard at Buckley Homestead. Can’t miss it. They got a big ol’ sign and everything. So go on, give it a try. You might just surprise yourself and learn somethin’ new.
I heard tell that kids like it too, which is good I reckon. Gets ‘em off them phones and lookin’ at somethin’ real for a change. Maybe it’ll inspire ‘em to be scientists or somethin’ when they grow up. Or maybe they’ll just learn to appreciate the beauty of the night sky. Either way, it’s a good thing.
So, that’s about all I got to say about the Calumet Astronomy Center. It’s a place for lookin’ at the stars, learnin’ a little bit, and maybe even feelin’ a little bit smaller and a little bit bigger all at the same time. If that sounds like somethin’ you’d be interested in, then you ought to go check it out.
