Okay, so I saw this “tarot dress” thing trending and thought, “Why not give it a shot?” I’m no seamstress, but I do enjoy a good DIY project, and this seemed like a fun challenge. Plus, I’ve been getting into tarot lately, so it felt kinda meant to be.

First, I gathered my materials. This was probably the hardest part, honestly. I needed:
- A plain dress – I opted for a simple white cotton one I already had.
- Fabric paints – I went with a variety of colors, making sure to include gold and silver for that mystical vibe.
- Paintbrushes – different sizes for details and larger areas.
- A tarot deck – for inspiration, obviously!
- Some cardboard – to put inside the dress so the paint wouldn’t bleed through.
- Pencil, for sketching on fabric.
The Fun Part: Painting!
I started by picking my favorite tarot card, The Star. It just felt right for this project. I lightly sketched the basic design onto the dress with a pencil. It didn’t have to be perfect, just a guideline.
Then, I dove into the painting. I started with the background, using watered-down blues and purples to create a night sky effect. It was a bit messy, but that’s part of the charm, right? I slowly added layers, letting each one dry before moving on to the next. It took longer time than plan, because I have no experience paining on the cloth.
The details were the trickiest. I used a fine-tipped brush for the stars and the figure on the card. My hands were a little shaky, but I managed to get it done. I even added some gold paint to make certain parts pop, like the star’s rays and the woman’s hair.

The Final Touches
After the paint was completely dry (I waited a full 24 hours just to be safe), I carefully removed the cardboard. There were a few smudges, but nothing too noticeable. I could probably iron it to set the paint, but I’m a little scared to ruin it, so I’ll probably just leave it as is.
Overall, I’m pretty happy with how it turned out! It’s not perfect, but it’s definitely unique, and it was a lot of fun to make. It’s a wearable piece of art that reflects my interests, and that’s pretty cool. Maybe I’ll try another card next time… The Moon, perhaps?
