Alright, so, I got into this whole thing about using tarot cards in therapy sessions. Sounds a bit out there, right? But stick with me. I had this client, let’s call her Sarah. She was stuck, like really stuck. Couldn’t put her finger on what was bugging her. We tried all the usual talk therapy stuff, but it was like hitting a brick wall. Then, I remembered something about using imagery to get people to open up, kind of like those inkblot tests. So, I thought, why not tarot cards?
First, I went and got myself a tarot deck. Not just any deck, though. I spent a good while looking for one with pictures that really grabbed me. You know, something that made me think. Then, I practiced with them myself. I flipped through each card, one by one, really taking in the images. I made three piles: one for cards I liked, one for cards I didn’t like, and one for the ones that didn’t really do anything for me.
- Like: These were the cards that just felt right, you know? Like they were showing something I connected with.
- Neutral: These were just there. No big feelings either way.
- Dislike: And these, well, these were the ones that gave me the ick or just made me feel uneasy.
After I had my piles, I went through them again, trying to see what they had in common. It was pretty interesting what I found out about myself, honestly.
Next, I brought the cards to my session with Sarah. I explained to her that we weren’t doing any fortune-telling. This was about getting her to tap into her feelings and thoughts in a different way. I had her go through the deck, just like I did. I told her to pick out any cards that stood out to her, no right or wrong answers.
The Breakthrough
She picked out a few cards, and we started talking about them. It was amazing. The images on the cards, they just unlocked something in her. She started talking about things she hadn’t mentioned before, feelings she had been pushing down. It was like the cards gave her permission to explore those hidden parts of herself.
We kept using the cards in our sessions, and it really helped. It wasn’t about the cards being magic or anything. It was about using them as a tool to get to what was really going on inside. I’ve used this method with a few other clients since then, and it’s been pretty successful. It’s not for everyone, but for some people, it’s just the key they need to unlock their inner world.
