So, I picked up this thing called the “Herbal Tarot Deck” the other day. Sounds a bit out there, right? But trust me, it’s pretty interesting. I’ve always been into both herbs and tarot, you know, as separate things. Never thought about putting them together, but someone did, and it’s kinda cool.
First off, I got the deck and the book. I found out that some guy named Michael Tierra came up with the idea, and Candis Cantin did the artwork. Apparently, there’s this other deck, the Rider-Waite Tarot, that’s like the granddaddy of tarot decks, super popular and all that, created way back in 1909. It was done by some folks from a group called the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn, whatever that is. Anyway, I figured I’d start with this herbal one because, well, herbs.
I started by just looking at the cards. Each card has a different herb on it, and the pictures are pretty neat. I spent a good few hours just flipping through them, trying to guess which herb was which before reading the description. I did okay, got about half of them right. Then I started reading the book.
The book is where it gets a bit tricky. It’s not just about the herbs; it’s about how each herb relates to the tarot card it’s on. So, you have to kinda learn two things at once. I’m not gonna lie, it was a bit much at first. But I took it slow. I picked one card a day and just focused on that, both the herb and the tarot meaning.
- I spent some time looking up more info about each herb.
- I made some herbal tea with the herb I just learned.
- I started to use the deck and do some simple readings for myself.
- I figured how the herb’s properties might relate to the reading.
It was actually pretty fun. I even did a reading for my friend, and she thought it was spot on. Although, maybe she was just being nice.
Anyway, it took me a few weeks, but I finally felt like I had a decent grasp of the whole thing. I’m no expert, but I can do a reading and actually understand what the cards are saying, both in the tarot sense and the herbal sense.
It’s been a cool little journey. I’ve learned a bunch about herbs, a bit more about tarot, and I’ve got a new way to look at both. Plus, I’ve got a cool new deck to show off. If you’re into herbs or tarot, or both, I’d say give the Herbal Tarot Deck a try. It’s a bit of a learning curve, but it’s definitely worth it. This deck is great for beginners, I found that out online somewhere too.
My advice if you’re curious:
- Take it slow. Don’t try to learn everything at once.
- Use other resources to learn about the herbs.
- Practice reading the cards regularly.
- Trust your intuition. The cards are just a tool; you’re the one doing the reading.
So yeah, that’s my experience with the Herbal Tarot Deck. Hope you found it interesting or helpful. Maybe I’ll post some of my readings sometime. Let me know if you’ve used this deck before or if you have any questions. Always happy to chat about this stuff!
